Wheelersburg uses turnovers to beat Gallipolis

WHEELERSBURG - It was like night and day, which may be why the Wheelersburg Pirates went from loss to win.

After playing a power team like Ironton last week, Wheelersburg faced the wide-open spread offense of the Gallipolis Blue Devils Friday night. The Pirates must have liked the spread better as they forced five turnovers en route to a 35-12 win.

"We finally got back to doing what we should have been doing," Pirates coach Tony Lewis said. "We go from running right at you to spreading it out and throwing every down. Being able to see two extremes like that will be a plus for us down the road."

Wheelersburg (1-1) had 367 total yards including 221 through the air as Tom Kaskey completed 12 of 19 with a pair of touchdowns.

Gallipolis racked up 406 total yards with quarterback Jayme Haggerty hitting 8 of 23 for 115 yards and three interceptions while running 10 times for 94 yards. Dustin Winters had 99 yards rushing on 10 attempts as the Blue Devils gain 270 yards on the ground.

"Our defense played pretty well. Their quarterback had quite a bit of speed, but we forced five turnovers," Lewis said.

Brandon Jackson intercepted a Haggerty pass on the second play of the game at the 35 to set up a Kaskey to Brian Stephenson touchdown pass as Wheelersburg went up 7-0.

A fumble recovery by Brandon White at the Gallipolis 47 led to the Pirates second score four plays later as Stephenson ran 8 yards for the TD and a 14-0 lead.

Gallipolis (1-1) drove 53 yards on its next possession capped by Winters' 5-yard run and it was 14-6.

After the Blue Devils had a drive that stalled at the 16, Kaskey hooked up with Matt Watson on an 84-yard scoring pass and it was 21-6.

A fumble recovery by Alex Prater at the Pirates 2-yard line halted another Gallipolis drive and Wheelersburg went 98 yards the other way with Brandon White scoring from a yard out to make it 28-6.

Gallipolis got within 28-12 on a 31-yard keeper by Haggerty just before the end of the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Wheelersburg closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard scamper by Alex Peach.
