Ironton must guard against letdown

Don't get caught looking ahead or you might not like what you left behind.

That's the warning for the Ironton Fighting Tigers who play game No. 2 at South Point Friday night against a young Pointers team.

Ironton is coming off an emotional 21-0 win over Wheelersburg and, coupled with South Point's 52-8 loss to Vinton County, could leave the Fighting Tigers ripe for an upset.

"You can't dwell on last week. Your goal is to get better each week, so you have to focus on the task at hand and play hard," Ironton coach Bob Lutz said.

"South Point is real young and it showed (last Friday). The game was not as bad as the score. They made a lot of inexperience mistakes."

The Pointers offense centers around sophomore quarterback Chris Smith, his array of receivers and running back Rocky Roe.

"Smith has a strong arm. He can get the ball up the field, and he has a lot of guys who can catch it. You can't concentrate on one guy. Roe gives the balance they need in their offense," Lutz said.

An ankle injury in practice last week left Ironton without the services of fullback and last year's leading rusher Jared Murphy against Wheelersburg. Murphy's status is uncertain for the Pointers.

In Murphy's absence, Darius Lewis slid over to fullback and ran for 167 yards. Halfback Marcus Williams added 100 yards, but it was halfback Eric Layne who did not have a carry who impressed Lutz the most.

"Layne put on a clinic of how a lead back is supposed to block," Lutz said. "Our offensive line didn't do a bad job, but the first touchdown drive was due mainly to Layne's blocking."

The Pointers were missing several starters last week due to injuries but could be at full strength for the Fighting Tigers.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
