CHESAPEAKE - The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office has arrested two people in connection with the alleged abuse of a four-year-old Chesapeake boy.

The child was admitted to a Huntington, W.Va., area hospital Thursday.

His mother, Diana Miller, 31, of 204 Rockwood Ave., is charged with second-degree felony child endangering. Thomas Overby, 32, who resides in the Miller house, is charged with second-degree felonious assault. They are both lodged in the Lawrence County Jail.

Sheriff Tim Sexton said his office was contacted Thursday afternoon by SEOEMS personnel and personnel at the hospital stating that there were signs of child abuse detected when the child was being treated.

"I do expect, as we pursue this investigation, that we will pursue additional charges. … I do feel this was not a one-time incident and there is evidence to that effect," Sexton said.

Three other children in the Miller household, all under the age of 11, are now in the custody of Lawrence County Childrens' Services.

"We are hoping and praying for the child's well-being," Sexton said. "These are the tough cases. Whenever we see cases of child abuse, it affects the officers. You can tell it in their voice when you talk to them about these cases. We will do what we can to complete a thorough investigation and present our evidence to the prosecutor and to the court."
