WESTLAKE - Cornell University football player James ''Jaime'' McManamon was headed back from Ithaca, N.Y, to his home in this Cleveland suburb for his sister's first communion when the 19-year-old honor student died in a car crash.

McManamon lost control of the Chevrolet Suburban he was driving and it rolled several times on Interstate 86 near Mina in western New York about 7 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.

McManamon, captain of the Lakewood St. Edward High School's football team in 2002, was pinned in the vehicle. Rescue workers got him out and onto a medical helicopter but he was pronounced dead at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa.

His mother, Kerry McManamon, 41, was in the back seat of the Suburban. She was ejected during the crash and suffered a broken leg.

A second passenger, Kelly A. Smith, 41, of Brooklyn, suffered a hand injury. She was riding in the front passenger seat.

Chautauqua (N.Y.) County sheriff's deputies said McManamon apparently fell asleep and the Suburban left the roadway. When he tried to get it back into the traffic lane, the vehicle slid sideways and rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof.

St. Edward Athletic Director Paul Michalko said McManamon was coming home for his younger sister's first communion Saturday.

''He was going to go back for finals next week,'' he said.

Cornell officials said that in addition to his mother and sister, McManamon is survived by his father, James, and two brothers.
