PROCTORVILLE - A tune-up game gave the Fairland Dragons a chance to charge their battery.
Pitcher Chris Barnett threw a complete game and catcher Adam Fuller hit a grand slam home run as the Fairland Dragons beat the Ironton Fighting Tigers 10-3 in a quick pickup game Wednesday.
The two teams agreed to play if they won their sectional tournament openers in an effort remain sharp for Friday's sectional finals.
Fairland coach Roger Snyder said the effort by his battery was a key reason for the win.
"Barnett threw pretty well. He's just a freshman. I was pleased with him," Snyder said. "We got a big double play in the first inning to stop their rally, and then Adam got the big hit that gave us the momentum."
Ironton coach Mark Lewis was looking for different results than his team produced.
"We swung at anything, we didn't field the ball, our pitchers were behind in the county, and we had no enthusiasm. We might as well have stayed home," Lewis said.
After the double play ended Ironton's scoring threat in the first inning, Fairland got five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Michael Hill doubled, Corey McKnight walked, and Greg Boster singled to load the bases. An out later, Matt Clark beat out an infield hit as a run scored. Fuller followed with his grand slam.
Ironton got a run in the third inning on walks to Adam Ferguson and Kevin Williams and a sacrifice fly by Josh Adkins.
But the Dragons scored five more times in the fourth inning.
"Hill singled, McKnight reached on an error and Boster blooped a single to right field to drive in a run. Zacc Russell was safe on a fielder's choice, Clark was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Fuller singled for an RBI, and Nick Zundel had a two-run single.
Adkins and Dennis Gagai doubled for a run in Ironton's fifth inning, and Adkins doubled and Gagai singled for a run in the seventh.
On Friday, Fairland (17-3) plays at Wheelersburg while Ironton (12-9) visits Portsmouth in the Division III sectional finals.
