BURLINGTON - Two men who have gone above and beyond expectations in community deeds have been honored for their work.
Ohio Senate President Doug White honored Ovinton Mayo, 72, and Owen Pleasant, 90, with certificates acknowledging their citizenship. They were presented their honors in February by their
pastor, Douglas C. Carter of the First Baptist Church of Burlington.
Mayo's certificate specified he was honored for "exceptional humanitarianism." Pleasant was honored for "outstanding community service."
The certificates cited that Mayo and Pleasant had "distinguished themselves as conscientious and hard-working Ohioans."
Although he retired from a janitorial business he started many years ago, Pleasant has always been a strong community and church supporter. He was the driving force behind restoring and maintaining
the grounds at the historic Burlington Cemetery 37.
Additionally, he assisted people in finding employment and has spoken about civic responsibilities throughout the county.
Pleasant's health has prevented him from community endeavors of late, but he's an active church member. Mayo represents his church at the food pantry at the Community Mission Outreach at Chesapeake.
He was a key organizer of the Men's Layman's Providence Mission Baptist Association. He helped begin the first Neighborhood Watch efforts in the community several years ago.
Both men are former Sunday school teachers and church superintendents. Mayo was also a trustee.
"(Pleasant) has done everything for the church except preach and be a deacon," Pastor Carter said. "I wish I had 50 men, women and children that were as dedicated as these two. There are very few people who have worked so hard and dedicated themselves to their community and their church. We (the church) are very proud of them."
Pleasant said he thinks the American society could be driven into a new direction if people would heed to a Bible verse - 2 Chronicles 7:14 - "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
His favorite book is Psalms.
Mayo and Pleasant are good friends. They have numerous Bible verses memorized and plan to continue support of their church.
