TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Iowa's 45-year drought in January bowl games is over.
With Fred Russell running for 150 yards and one touchdown, the 13th-ranked Hawkeyes dominated No. 17 Florida 37-17 in the Outback Bowl on Thursday.
Nathan Chandler threw for one TD and ran for another, Nate Kaeding kicked three field goals and Iowa (10-3) scored on a blocked punt for the third time this season to finish with double-digit wins in consecutive years for the first time in school history.
No. 11 Georgia 34, No. 12 Purdue 27, OT
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Kregg Lumpkin redeemed himself for a stunning fumble late in regulation, scoring on a 1-yard run in the first overtime to give No. 11 Georgia a 34-27 victory over No. 12 Purdue in the Capital One Bowl on Thursday.
The Boilermakers (9-4) rallied from a 24-0 deficit in the first half, getting a chance to tie it with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter.
With Purdue out of timeouts, Georgia coach Mark Richt called a run instead of ordering quarterback David Greene to take a knee. Lumpkin, a freshman, got tied up in the backfield and fumbled trying to get away. Niko Koutouvides recovered for Purdue at the Georgia 34.
The Bulldogs (11-3) kept the Boilermakers from getting a first down, but Ben Jones kicked a 44-yard field goal with 49 seconds remaining to force overtime tied at 27.
Taking the ball first, the Bulldogs got near the end zone with the help of a pass interference penalty, then went for it on fourth down from inside the 1. Lumpkin managed to slide through a crease for the touchdown.
No. 23 Maryland 41, No. 20 West Virginia 7
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - If Maryland could get West Virginia on the schedule a few more times a year, these 10-win seasons would be a breeze.
Scott McBrien threw for a career-high 381 yards to help No. 23 Maryland to a 41-7 victory over No. 20 West Virginia in the Gator Bowl on Thursday.
McBrien threw for three scores and ran for another. His teammate, Steve Suter, returned a punt for a touchdown and made a highlight-reel catch to help the Terrapins (10-3) reach the 10-win mark for the third straight year under coach Ralph Friedgen.
