East rallies past Flyers

Turnovers caused the turnaround.

When Shawn Hacker hit a baseline jumper with 7:22 to play, it gave the St. Joseph Flyers a 60-53 lead. A foul shot by Jeremy Addis had the Flyers up 63-59 with 5:41 to go.

Then came nine straight turnovers and more than four scoreless minutes. When Ryan Schwab sank two foul shots with 2:02 to play, the Flyers trailed 74-65 and the Portsmouth East Tartans went on to an 84-70 win Tuesday.

St. Joseph (1-2) trailed 39-33 at the half, then came roaring out of the locker room to outscore East 25-14 and take a 58-53 lead.

"The third quarter was the best basketball we've played all year," Flyers coach Adam Simpson said. "The fourth quarter we just made bad decisions. We went four minutes where the wheels just came off."

East used 7 of 15 shooting from the 3-point range to build its first half lead.

The Tartans were up 32-23 with 3:38 left in the half on a layup by Josh Hoskins.

Hacker scored seven points including a 3-pointer that got the Flyers within 36-33. Dan Downing's 3-pointer just before the buzzer put East up six at the break.

Hacker then scored 12 points to trigger a third quarter surge. Alex Swarts followed up a missed shot at the 4:14 mark that gave St. Joseph a 44-43 lead and the Flyers outscored East 14-10 the rest of the quarter.

But then came more turnovers - the Flyers had 30 for the game - and the lead evaporated.

With the Flyers forced to foul, East converted 17 of 27 free throws in the fourth quarter to lock up the win.

"In a game like this, every play is critical, and it was," Simpson said. "We didn't take care of the ball and that got them the momentum. We could never get it back," Simpson said.

Hacker had a monster game with a career-high 36 points, 24 rebounds and four blocked shots. Swarts turned in his best performance with 13 points, 14 rebounds and two assists.

Hoskins led East with 28 points and Downing scored 22. J.D. King added 12 points.
