CHESAPEAKE - The matchups didn't match.

Taking advantage of their overall size and shooting, the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers created mismatches as they beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 61-43 Monday to remain unbeaten in six games.

"We knew we had a size advantage and we wanted to create mismatches which we did," Ironton coach Amy Hughes said. "We did a pretty good job defensively, we shot pretty well, and we did a good job on the boards the second half."

Ironton made 20 of 42 field goal attempts for 48 percent and held a 34-24 rebounding advantage. Each team had 13 rebounds the first half, but Ironton grabbed 21 the second half including eight on the offensive end.

"We shot the ball well enough, but I thought Chesapeake did a good job making us work for our shots. They've got a nice team and Chad does a good job with them," Hughes said.

Chesapeake (3-2) was only 18 of 58 from the field for 31 percent.

"We played hard and we didn't play that poorly. We gave up too many second shots," Chesapeake coach Chad Belville said. "We played pretty good defense, but to their credit they made their shots. And Ironton played pretty good defense."

The game was close late in the third quarter when Ironton scored eight unanswered points over the final 1:19 of the quarter to open up a 46-32 lead.

"The last minute and a half of the third quarter and their offensive rebounding the second half were the biggest factors," Belville said.

Sarah Cartmell's foul shot got the run started. Sara Hacker then hit a layup and a 3-pointer for a 44-32 lead. A nifty pass from Andrea Rudmann to Cartmell under the basket with nine seconds on the clock made it 46-32.

A layup by Jennifer Rice off a pass from Lisa Perry got the Lady Panthers within 12 points to begin the fourth quarter. Hacker made a foul shot and Danielle Henderson followed up a missed shot to put Ironton up 55-40 with 3:55 to play.

Hacker hit a 15-footer to start a 6-0 run. Rudmann sank three free throws and Hacker another foul shot to make it 61-42 with 19 seconds left.

Ironton never tailed in the game. Hacker made a layup and a 3-pointer for a 5-1 lead.

Chesapeake got within 9-7 on a 12-foot baseline jumper by Joy Mayenchein. Mandi Boykin hit back-to-back shots and Rudmann sank two free throws for a 15-7 lead at the end of the quarter.

Alysson Baise made a layup to pull the Lady Panthers close at 20-17 at the 4:08 mark of the second quarter. Rudmann scored four points and Boykin scored with just 1:49 on the clock to give Ironton a 26-21 lead at the break.

In the second half, Ironton outrebounded Chesapeake 21-11, made 11 of 21 field goal attempts and converted 12 of 18 free throws.

"We also did a good job limiting our turnovers. Almost all of our turnovers were our fault. We just got careless with the ball," Hughes said.

Rudmann led all scorers with 20 points. She also had three assists and two steals.

Hacker finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Boykin scored 11 points and had a career-high 11 rebounds. Henderson had six rebounds and Cartmell nine points and four rebounds.

Rice led Chesapeake with nine points. Joanna Delimpo had eight points and five rebounds while Perry handed out seven assists.
