CHESAPEAKE - What the Chesapeake Lady Panthers didn't do what they needed to do, and as a result they didn't get what they wanted to get.

The Lady Panthers were hurt on the boards and were plagued by turnovers as they lost to the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 49-48 in double overtime Monday.

Tonya McKenzie made two foul shots with nine-tenths of a second left in the second overtime to give Portsmouth the win.

"Before the game we said we had to keep Portsmouth off the boards and take care of the ball. But we got hammered on the boards and had 40 turnovers. That's a deadly combination. And we didn't shoot well from the foul line," Lady Panthers coach Chad Belville said.

"Hopefully, that's an uncharacteristic game for us."

All of Portsmouth's points in the overtimes were from the foul line as the Lady Trojans converted 8 of 22 free throws. Portsmouth was 17 of 39 from the line for the game while Chesapeake finish 5 of 12.

Noelle Wood had 12 points while Lisa Perry got 10 points and six assists for Chesapeake (2-1).

Brittany Boyle added three 3-pointers for nine points, and also grabbed eight rebounds.

Chesapeake led 11-7 at the end of the first quarter and 21-14 at the half. But Portsmouth closed the gap to 41-24 after three quarters and took a four-point lead with 1:30 to play in regulation.

Boyle hit a 3-pointer to get Chesapeake within one and Perry sank one of two foul shots to tie the game at the end of regulation.

"Joy Mayenchein kept us alive in the fourth quarter, and Brittany Boyle shot well," Belville said. "Defensively, we didn't play well and that's where we make our money."

Each team scored four points in the first overtime. Chesapeake had a 48-47 lead in the second overtime but a turnover gave Portsmouth new life. McKenzie drove the lane and drew the foul. She then made both foul shots to give Portsmouth the win.

"We didn't play well, but the girls kept fighting and that's a good sign," Belville said.

Chesapeake hosts Minford Saturday.
