CHESAPEAKE - For some, it's the closing of a golf course. For others, it'll be part of a community being lost forever.
After more than 35 years of providing pleasure to area golfers, Forest Hills Golf Course will sink its final putt on Sunday, Nov. 16.
"It has been interesting to see the reaction of our customers when they finally realize that this time it is closing for real," said co-owner Tammy Mahar said.
The state of Ohio purchased the course more than a year ago and allowed Rich and Tammy Mahar to lease the property. The lease expires Nov. 30. The property will be used in the completion of the Chesapeake bypass.
"After so many years of uncertainty, the reality has hit home with most of them. So many of our customers cut their golfing teeth on this course and truly do hate to see it go," Tammy Mahar said.
"A lot of people have expressed disappointment in the course closing, but overall they understand. We expect to see a lot of 'one last time' rounds of golf the next few weeks."
Rich Mahar, a PGA professional who also own Sandy Creek Golf Course in Ashland, Ky., will sell all the equipment, golf carts, clubhouse items and remove sod from the putting greens on Monday, Nov. 17. Under the terms of sale, anything not nailed down has to be removed from the premises.
But until the final sale, the Mahars expect a lot of sentimental business.
"If the weather cooperates, it should be a popular place as local residents who have supported Forest Hills for so many years say their goodbyes in their farewell round," Tammy Mahar said.
