CHESHIRE - Young teams always seem to ride the roller coaster.

After being foiled in an upset bid last week against Rock Hill, the young Hornets went in the opposite direction Friday night as River Valley routed Coal Grove 42-6 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

River Valley (6-1, 1-1) bounced back from a 43-0 shellacking at the hands of Chesapeake last week. The Raiders amassed 374 total yards, including 352 on the ground.

Riley Rice had the big all-around game for the Raiders. Rice ran 12 times for 141 yards and caught two passes for 22 yards. He also scored twice.

Quarterback Joey Graham ran 22 times for 96 yards and threw for another 22 yards.

Coal Grove (1-6, 0-2) had 167 yards - all on the ground - with Justin Hyland gaining 61 yards on 16 attempts.

River Valley took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards for a touchdown. Graham's 1-yard run capped the march, and he passed to Rice for the conversion and an 8-0 lead.

The Hornets came back and moved the ball to the Raiders 38, but the drive stalled on downs.

Rice had a 22-yard run to the Hornets 35, and nine plays later Graham scored on a 1-yard run to put the lead at 15-0.

Wamsley's 4-yard scoring run extended the lead to 21-0 with just 1:36 to go in the half.

Coal Grove got its only score of the game when Steve Hern returned the kickoff 60 yards for the touchdown, and the Hornets trailed 21-6. But River Valley wasn't finished, either.

A 36-yard run by Rice got the ball to the Hornets 20-yard line, and four plays later, Graham hit Rice with a 12-yard scoring pass to make it 28-6 at the break.

Wamsley had a 57-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter to make it 35-6. Rice had a 21-yard scoring run with 9:48 left to set the final score.
