An Ironton man was arrested Wednesday after explosives were found in his residence.

Thomas Slaughter, 44, of 714 S. Seventh St., was charged with unlawful possession of a dangerous ordinance and the illegal manufacturing and procession of explosives. He was arraigned Thursday in Ironton Municipal Court and was released on a $5,000 bond.

Ironton police Capt. Dan Johnson and patrolman Mitch Crum were summoned to the Slaughter residence after a person there reported finding explosives.

"It is something called Primacord," Ironton police detective Capt. Chris Bowman said. "It is similar to plastic explosives and resembles a large electrical cord. You use it by putting in a blasting fuse and detonating it."

Bowman described the quantity of Primacord as "significant." He said it was removed from the residence and is being stored in a safe place as evidence in the case. It will likely be destroyed at a later date.

Bowman said Slaughter is a licensed explosives technician who had previously worked for a company in Chicago.

"We take this seriously," Bowman said. "The substance is not dangerous as long as it is not ignited, but he should not have had it in his home. That's the bottom line."
