PEDRO -- The Chesapeake Panthers needed a point. Everyone got it for them.

With virtually every runner or thrower giving a personal best performance, the Panthers managed to edge the South Point Pointers 131 to 130 to win the Ohio Valley Conference track meet Friday at Rock Hill High School.

The meet eventually came down to the final event when Chesapeake finished second in the 4×400 relay and South Point was third. But Chesapeake coach Phil Davis said the meet was decided by all the performances, not just the final race.

"You go back through the meet, and there were all kinds of places where we got the one point," Davis said. "I thought we were done early. The kids stepped up big time. We knew both of those races would be close. This was a great meet to watch. There were some great races."

"Both" those races were the 4×400 and the 4×100 relays. Chesapeake's team of Caleb Robbins, Tyler Marcum, Junior Jaime and Cody Hunt ran a 3:36.4 to get second in the 4×400, their best time of the season.

The 4×100 relay set a school record with a 44.4 time as Marcum, Jaime and the Hunt brothers upset Fairland for first place.

"We lost to all those people just last week. The same thing in the 4-by-100. But our guys understood the meet was on the line. I told them they had to run better than they ever have and they did. We ran three or four seconds better than we have all year," Davis said.

As for winning the 4×100 relay, Davis was as surprised as he was pleased.

"We haven't beaten Fairland in a long time in that race," Davis said.

Michael Hunt led the Panthers to their second straight OVC title and fifth in the last sixth years. He won the long jump, the 110 and 300 hurdles, and ran the anchor on the 4×100 relay.

"We were expecting Michael to do what he did. This is the fourth week in a row he's won the long jump on his last jump," Davis said. "He's

won three events for the fourth meet in a row and also ran on a winning relay."

Hunt's performance was overshadowed by South Point's Zach Smith who took high point honors with 36. Smith ran in the four longest races and sacrificed time for points. He won the 800 and 1600 meter races while placing second in the 400 and 3200 runs.

But while Smith was trying to give the Pointers some extra points, Chesapeake countered with hits depth.

Scott Davidson cleared 13-feet to tie the school record in the pole vault as he finished third. Zach Waugh won the shot put and Shane Williams was third. Kory Thomas was third in the discus

"Zach Waugh gave us a pretty big boost. He won the shot and (Coal Grove's Dan) Cordle has beaten him all year, and then Shane Williams got third. Those were big points. Kory Thomas threw 128 in the discus and that was his personal best," Davis said.

The Panthers Michael White was second in the 300 hurdles. which Davis called "huge." Chris Muncie got fifth in

the 1600 and sixth in the 3200. Justin Porter was second to teammate T. R. Hannan in the high jump.

"Muncie was hurting when he ran the 3200 and got sixth. And Justin Porter got second in the high jump which we weren't expecting. He had a personal best (6-foot)," Davis said.

Fairland's Antwaune Brown tied the meet record in the 100 meter dash at 10.8 seconds. River Valley's Allan Brown matched the league record of 22.0 seconds in the 200 meter dash.

River Valley, in its first league meet, was third with 80 points followed by Rock Hill with 66, Fairland 55 and Coal Grove had 32 points.

"I have to tip my hat to Rock Hill. I thought the meet went really well," Davis said.
