For five decades, the Coal Grove Lions Club has been serving up pancakes so that those less fortunate can see. On Saturday, the 50th annual Harold Haney Pancake Day will be hosted in the Dawson-Bryant High School gymnasium from 7 a.m. until noon.
Those attending the event can enjoy all the pancakes, sausage and drinks they want for $4 at the door or $3 by buying a ticket from a member before Saturday. All proceeds are used to buy eye glasses for children in need and to provide scholarships for area high school students.
The current major service commitment of Lions Clubs International is the prevention and reversal of blindness. This program takes the name of SightFirst and includes the activities of every chapter in the world working to control blindness. SightFirst is an international program dedicated to controlling blindness worldwide. Clubs work individually or through their districts to prevent and reverse the major causes of blindness in their area.
One such way is the collection of old eyeglasses. For years, Lions Clubs have been accepting donations of used eyeglasses. The glasses are refurbished and given to those who do not have the funds to purchase pairs on their own.
And what better way to support such a cause than by enjoying good food and fellowship? Thousands have been served by the Coal Grove Lions over the years, and many people mark the day on their calendars as a social event.
It is our duty as a community to support our civic clubs' efforts to help those less fortunate. These men and women deserve a pat on the back for taking the initiative to donate their time for worthy causes.
Not only is $3 or $4 a good deal for an all-you-can-eat pancake buffet, you can go home knowing your money will be used for a good cause. Sight, unfortunately, is a gift with which not everyone is blessed.
