The Christmas holiday is a time of sharing with others, but law enforcement officials warn it is also a time for some to take instead of give.
Shoplifting and thefts
are of particular concern during the holiday season. Being cautious is just the first step to take when trying to deter Christmas thefts.
Most crimes can be avoided by using a little common sense. For example, do not leave packages, purses or other valuables in plain sight inside your vehicle -- this is too tempting for a would-be thief. Do not assume you will not be a target for a thief looking to save a few bucks this Christmas. Keep your valuables hidden in the trunk.
Shoppers aren’t the only ones who should take precautions to protect their goods -- area store owners, managers and staff also need to keep watch over their shelves.
Shoplifting is a crime that proves to be higher during the holiday shopping season. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, the holidays are the best time for shoplifters to make their move, mainly because the stores are crowded and people are hurrying around, which makes it difficult for store employees to monitor thefts.
Inventory shrinkage -- a combination of employee theft, shoplifting and vendor fraud -- cost U.S. retailers more than $31 billion last year, according to the latest National Retail Security Survey report. The Better Business Bureau estimates retailers will lose more than $16 million nationwide in theft during the month of December alone. It is also estimated that shoplifters strike at least 1 million times a day, and each time one is caught, 35 to 50 are not.
Sadly, this often costs the consumers as many retailers must increase prices to offset losses. On average, one theft costs consumers 5 to 10 cents per dollar spent in the retail economy, according to the Better Business Bureau.
Christmas shopping should be an enjoyable experience. Being careful and reporting any crime you see will make the holiday shopping season better for everyone.
