PEDRO – Harris came up big for the Fairland Lady Dragons once again. Only this time it was Holley, not Ashley.
While Ashley Harris has been a four-year starter, her sister Holley, a sophomore guard, came off the bench to score 13 points and grab eight rebounds Wednesday to help Fairland rout the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 56-35 in the Division III sectional tournament.
In fact, Holley Harris was one of several players off the bench who helped Fairland overcome a sluggish performance and advance to Saturday’s 2:45 p.m. sectional title game against Ironton.
"We weren’t real intense. Our bench did a good job of coming in and picking up our intensity," Lady Dragons coach Nathan Speed said.
"Holley had a great game off the bench. Allison (McConnell) and Megan (Fisher) gave us some quality minutes. Like I said, our bench did a nice job for us."
Jennifer Jones added 12 points and Brooke Fisher 10 as Fairland improved to 18-2. Fisher also had five assists and five steals while Jones had three assists and five steals.
Ashley Harris added four rebounds and seven steals.
Desiree Butler scored 14 points and Stacy Easterling 11 to lead the Lady Hornets.
Fairland led just 11-9 at the end of the first quarter as Fisher scored five points. Butler had five points and Easterling hit a 3-pointer to keep the Lady Hornets close.
The Lady Dragons blitzed the Hornets 19-8 the second quarter to take a 30-17 halftime lead. Jones had seven points and Holley Harris five to key the outburst.
Holley Harris got eight more points in the third quarter as Fairland extended its lead to a comfortable 45-24.
Saturday’s game against Ironton is the third meeting of the season for the two teams. Fairland has won the previous two meetings including 48-47 at home last Saturday.
Ironton spanked Wheelersburg 56-29 in the second game.
"We know we have to play better defensively Saturday against Ironton. They’re athletic and they can do a lot of things. We’ll have to be on top of our game," Speed said.
