When state lawmakers get together to make decisions on the state budget, it will be comforting to know the chairman of the Finance and Appropriations Committee will be looking out for Lawrence County and southeastern Ohio.
It was announced last week that Speaker of the House Larry Householder has selected John Carey of the 92nd House District to serve as chair of the Ohio House’s Finance and Appropriations Committee, which oversees state finance proposals.
A watchdog for southeastern Ohio, Carey has worked diligently to secure state funding for the region. Whether it be for economic development or school funding, John Carey has proven to be an individual determined to take care of the constituents of his district.
His peers obviously think highly of his character as well as he has served as chair or co-chair of several House committees.
As co-chair of a joint committee to address school funding, Carey and his House colleagues are working towards finding ways to limit the reliance on property taxes. This would address the discrepancy in the funding of school districts in areas such as Southeastern Ohio as compared to those in the urban areas of the state.
