The Relay for Life is a nearly 12-hour event that honors the men, women and children who are fighting cancer. Volunteers will donate their time to walk around the high school track through the evening and into the next day – all to raise money to further research that could someday produce a cure for this dreadful disease.

And there has been progress in the last decade. As early as the 1960s, cancer was nothing but a death sentence. Patients had few options and counted the days they had left. Hope was centered on beating tremendous odds.

Although still a serious concern, a cancer diagnosis is no longer the beginning of the end. There are many treatment options and many success stories of patients who have fought and won.

And those are the kind of stories the American Cancer Society wants to hear more often.

If you can’t participate in this year’s Relay for Life, drop by Dawson-Bryant High School and make a donation. All the money will go to cancer research. A dollar, $10, $20, whatever you can give would be welcome.

And, who knows, that donation might be part of the research funding that breaks the code and saves millions of lives. That is the best kind of lottery to win.
