JACKSON – This wasn’t the way it was supposed to end.
Nothing went right from the start for the Green Bobcats as they lost 13-0 to Paint Valley in the Division IV district semifinals.
Green committed five errors that led to 13 unearned runs.
"We just didn’t play the way we’re capable. We gave them four runs in the first inning and that set the tempo for the whole game," said Green coach Dave Shoupe said. "It was just that kind of a day."
An error, a sacrifice bunt in which the Bobcats failed to cover first base, a hit batsman, and a bloop base hit produced two runs. Another hit batsman and a base hit led to two more runs and it was 4-0.
Paint Valley added two more runs in the top of the third to lead 6-0, and then Green showed a spark in the bottom of the inning.
Green had only one real scoring threat. The Bobcats loaded the bases when Matt Riffe single, Jimmy Moore walked, and Chris Williams singled. But two straight strikeouts ended the rally.
"That was a pivotal point. We were in a position to make it a game, and we couldn’t get a clutch hit," said Shoupe.
Despite the loss, the Bobcats finished the season 16-7 and runners-up in the Southern Ohio Conference.
"This game is no reflection of our year. We had an outstanding year and the kids can be proud of that," said Shoupe.
The Bobcats had six hits with Williams going 3-for-4. Kyle Dyer, Jeff Dixon, and Riffe each went 1-3.
Williams’ effort capped a remarkable season. He finished the year batting .488 with 19 stolen bases.
