CHESAPEAKE – After stalling for five innings, the Chesapeake Lady Panthers finally popped the clutch.
Chesapeake rallied with two runs in the sixth inning and Kim Frye fired a one-hitter as the Panthers nipped the South Point Lady Pointers 2-1 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Frye struck out nine and walked three to outdueal South Point’s Tara Layne who fanned three, walked one, and yielded seven hit.
"Kim pitched a great game, but so did Layne," Chesapeake coach Robb Morrison said. "We put a lot of balls in play, but they have a nice defense behind Layne. They do a good job, but we were able to clutch up when we had to."
South Point opened the game with a run in the first inning.
Shannon James walked, went to second on a passed ball, took third on a ground out, and came home when Nekka Mains reached on error.
Chesapeake remained scoreless until the sixth when it clutched up and scored both runs.
With one out, Frye singled to center, Kristen Huff walked, and Jessica Hall singled to load the bases.
Jessica Rice delivered a base hit to score Frye with the tying run, and Shelli White singled to right-center to drive home the winning run.
Chesapeake and South Point are both 6-3 overall and 3-1 n the OVC.
The Lady Panthers hosted a tournament Saturday with Oak Hill, Rock Hill, and South Gallia, and hosts Fairland Monday in a key OVC game.
