South Point – Pitcher Patrick Panell is a lot of "P" alliteration. Maybe that’s why Panell balanced it out with a lot of Ks. Panell racked up 12 strikeouts as he scattered nine hits to pitch the South Point Pointers to a 10-3 Ohio Valley Conference win Wednesday over the Rock Hill Redmen.
The Pointers collected 12 hits with Jamie Douglas going 2-3 with a triple. Shane Fuller and Panell were 1-2.
Tyler Virgin was 2-3 and Josh Harper homered for the Redmen.
South Point, 4-1 and 2-0 in the OVC, jumped out to a 3-0 lead the first inning.
Jared Waggoner doubled with two outs, took third on a passed ball, B. J. Belville walked, Panell walked, and a wild pitch scored a run.
Douglas walked, Dick Weaver was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and a wild pitch scored another run.
The lead went to 5-0 in the second.
Justin Eaches singled, Shane Fuller walked, both moved up on a passed ball, and Brian Cremeans sacrificed the runner but a throwing error on the play allowed both runners to score.
South Point got three more runs in the fourth.
Fuller and Cremeans singled, Waggoner hit into a fielder’s choice, and Belville singled to score the runners. Belville came around to score on a hit by Panell.
Rock Hill got a run in the fifth, but the Pointers got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Jarred Perdue, J. D. Sullivan, and Shane Holsinger all singled.
With one out in the sixth, Douglas tripled and scored on a passed ball for the final South Point run.
Harper hit a two-out, two-run homer after Joey Crabtree singled in the top of the seventh for Rock Hill. South Point hosts Coal Grove Thursday and Chesapeake Friday in league games.
Rock Hill (1-5, 0-2) plays at Coal Grove Friday.
