After falling behind by as many as 10 points, the Lady Vikings inched their way back until they took the lead and beat the Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers 53-50 Thursday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

The turnaround was key by the Lady Vikings rebounding and ability to hang onto the ball. Symmes Valley had 37 of their 48 rebounds and they had only 11 of their 27 turnovers the second half.

"We hacked away at it a little at a time and we went to a man-to-man and the girls did a nice job with it. They just kept whittling away at the lead," Lady Vikings coach Rob Bess said.

Renee Donahoe scored 15 points while Keren Bell had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Rebecca Mount 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Vikes.

Katie Hemphill led Clay with 24 points while Brandi Summers scored 13.

Donahoe had five points and Mount four the first quarter as Symmes Valley took a 15-11 lead. But the Lady Vikings got just six points the second quarter and fell behind 27-21 at the break.

Clay built a 43-33 lead after three quarters, but Bell scored 10 the fourth quarter including 6 of 6 from the line as Symmes Valley rallied for the win.

"They’re shooting cooled down, but we did a better job defensively," said Bess.

The Lady Vikings, 4-11 and 3-6 in the SOC, hosts Green Monday in a league game.
