When the South Point Pointers faced the Spring Valley Timberwolves Thursday night in the big school division of the Huntington St. Joe Invitational, the defense held leading scorer Kris Wilson in check.

For a while.

When Wilson’s teammates of Brandon Moore, Zach Cumpston, and Dustin Dean started to score, it ruined coach Mark Lafon’s defensive plans.

The quartet’s scoring also allowed Wilson a little more freedom and he responded with 33 points as the T-Wolves beat the Pointers 80-59.

"We were playing well the first half and our kids played hard," said Lafon.

"They hit 7-of-8 shots to start the second half and none of them were Wilson. Their other kids stepped up, and when we had to guard the other kids, that’s when Wilson started up."

Moore scored 18 points, Cumpston 11, and Dean 10 as Spring Valley advanced to the 9 p.m. title game Saturday against Lexington (Ky.) Bryan Station.

South Point (5-8) was led by B. J. Ferrell with 19 points and Shane Holsinger scored 16. The Pointers play Cabell Midland at 7 p.m. Saturday in the consolation game.

Both teams had 37 rebounds with Jarred Perdue grabbing 10, Brian Cremeans seven, and Holsinger six.

"That’s the best we’ve rebounded all year," said Lafon.

The Pointers led 13-10 after the first quarter and it was tied 25-25 at the break.

Spring Valley came out firing the second half and had a 10-point lead before the Pointers hit a couple of baskets to get within six.

Wilson then drained a 27-foot 3-pointer to ignite the T-Wolves as they took a 52-38 lead at the end of the third quarter.

"Wilson got into the game and they slowly pulled away," said Lafon.

Wilson, a junior who has already committed to Marshall, made eight 3-point goals.

After Saturday, the Pointers host Chesapeake in a key Ohio Valley Conference game.
