McDermott – It would have been a great promotion for the Elks Hoop Shoot contest. Unless you were the South Point Pointers.
The Pointers were 75 percent from the line by making 6-of-7 foul shots. The Northwest Mohawks hit nearly 77 percent of their free throws as they converted 20-of-26 from the line and edged South Point 60-57 Saturday night.
South Point led up until six minutes left to play. The game see-sawed back-and-forth from that point, but Northwest converted 16-of-20 free throws in the final quarter.
"Give them credit. They hit their free throws when they went to the line. But we had our chances to win. We had open shots and just missed them," Pointers coach Mark Lafon said.
Brian Cremeans had 13 points and Shane Holsinger 10 to lead the Pointers. B. J. Ferrell and Jared Perdue added 9 points each.
Ryan Mitchell had a game-high 19 points to lead Northwest. Matt Yeager added 11.
South Point, 4-5, led 12-10 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 30-22 at the half thanks to a pair of 3-point goals by Justin Eaches.
"Justin Eaches hit two big shots for us. It gave us an eight-point lead, but we let them back in it and it became single possession game. We ran sets and got open looks, we just didn’t hit our shots," Lafon said.
Northwest closed the gap to 42-40 after three quarters to set up the thrilling finish.
South Point hosts Coal Grove Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
