John Barton Phillips

SOUTH POINT — John Barton Phillips, 94, of South Point, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2011 at the Heartland of Jackson Nursing Home in Jackson.

The Ironton native was born Feb. 22, 1917, the son of the late Frank F. Phillips and Beulah Wyatt Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was a 1935 graduate of Ironton High School and had lived most of his life in Lawrence County.  He was a veteran serving in the United States Army Air Corps in Trinidad and Iwo Jima during World War II.  He retired in 1979 from Ashland Oil Inc. after working 27 years as a boiler operator and was a member of the Ashland Oil Retiree’s Club.  He was a lifetime member of the Ironton lodge 177 BPOE where he was a past exalted ruler.  He was a master Mason of the Ironton F. & A.M. Lodge 198 and a member of the Ironton Commandery 45 Knights Templar, York Rite and El Hasa Shriners Temple in Ashland, Ky.  He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ironton for more than 88 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. William ( Martha J.) Boggs of Lansing, Mich.; and a brother, Frank Forrest Phillips of Holt, Mich.

He is survived by a brother, Attorney Robert W. Phillips of Columbus; nephews, Thomas Boggs, William Boggs, Frank F. Phillips and James W. Phillips; and niece, Linda S. Kender.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Hayes-Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Young officiating.  Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery.  Friends may call from noon until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home.  To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.
