MILLER — An eastern end business was destroyed by fire early this morning.

DJ’s Mini Market on State Route 7 caught fire at approximately 1:20 a.m., Rome Township Fire Department President George Barnett said. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

“The only thing we can tell is, it started in the back of the building,” Barnett said. “Nobody was there at the time.”

Rome firefighters received mutual aid from Chesapeake, Crown City and Proctorville departments. In all, approximately 20 firefighters with eight trucks battled the blaze. Some were on the scene more than four hours.

Barnett said the type of building — there were three layers of construction in the attic, made it more difficult to fight the fire.

“And with it being metal, that makes the fire burn hotter and faster,” Barnett said.
