Lady Tigers go cold in fourth quarter

Better check the sights on that gun. It’s not hitting its target.
Ironton missed 18 shots from an 8-foot and closer diameter around the basket in a 47-36 loss to the Minford Lady Falcons on Monday.
The poor shooting inside spilled over to the Lady Tigers outside shooting as well. Ironton was just 13 of 43 from the field for 30 percent.
“We missed too many shots from point-blank range,” said Ironton coach Doug Graham.
“But we need to play with more emotion and more intensity. Sometimes we just get in cruise control. We need to be focused at the start of the game. You can’t just turn it on.”
The Lady Tigers worst shooting came in the fourth quarter — one for nine — when they scored just two points and saw a 34-33 lead evaporate.
Minford (5-2) was 18 of 41 from the floor for 44 percent. The Lady Falcons were 7 of 11 at the line while Ironton was one of four.
Lorna Ceaser had nine points — she attempted all of Ironton’s free throws — and grabbed 10 rebounds. Brea Tackett also had nine points and Mercedes Crockrel added eight.
Ally Conrad had 12 points and Whitney McManus 10 for Minford.
Ironton led 6-4 late in the first quarter when Minford scored seven unanswered points en route to an 11-8 lead.
The Lady Tigers came back to take a 15-12 lead on a 15-footer by Janie Morris and a trey by Tackett.
Tackett hit another triple to go up 20-19, but Minford went on an 8-2 run including a 3-pointer by Abby Donahoe at the buzzer to take a 27-22 halftime lead.
Ironton ran off eight straight points to regain the lead at 32-19 and Crockrel’s layup before the end of the quarter had the Lady Tigers up 34-33.
Kendra Justice hit a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter and put Minford up 36-34. Ceaser followed up her own shot to tie the game with 7:08 to play, but that would be Ironton’s last basket as the Lady Falcons went on an 11-0 run to end the game.
