In a finish of clutch shots, the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates got the final attempt.
Sarah Schmidt’s two foul shots in the final seconds lifted the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates over the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 42-40 Saturday.
Chelsea Delong hit a clutch 3-pointer to tie the game at 40, but a foul in the backcourt sent Schmidt to the line to shoot a one-and-one. Schmidt hit both shots with five seconds left.
Coal Grove was unable to get off a final shot.
“We had shot after shot and couldn’t make them,” said Coal Grove coach Nick Miller. “We played well defensively, but we couldn’t score today other than Cox.”
Jordyn Cox scored 23 points to lead the Lady Hornets. Danielle Carpenter was next with eight.
“Jordyn was so sick and I don’t know how she even played,” said Miller.
Schmidt had all five points in the first quarter as Wheelersburg went up 6-5. Carpenter had four of the Hornets’ points.
Coal Grove (5-2) was up 18-12 in the second quarter but Wheelersburg went on a 7-0 run to close the half to lead 19-18.
The Lady Pirates used three 3-point goals in the third to take a 33-28 lead despite eight points by Cox.
Cox scored seven more in the fourth quarter to rally the Lady Hornets and set the stage for the dramatic finish.
Schmidt led Wheelersburg (4-4) with 18 points.
