The Symmes Valley Vikings suffered their worst shooting night of the season as they lost 58-47 to the Western Indians Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“We had good shots. We had wide-open looks and we looked good when we took them, but they just didn’t fall. I don’t know how many bounced around the rim and came out,” said Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter.

The Vikings were just 19-of-66 from the floor for 29 percent. They were 6-of-16 from behind the arc and 3-of-7 at the line.

Western jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the first quarter. Kris Tibbs scored six of the Vikings’ points.

After the Vikings got within 23-18 at the half, Josh Craft scored eight points in the third quarter as Symmes Valley cut the deficit to 39-37 after three quarters.

“We felt like if we were within five points or less going into the fourth quarter, we’d be in good shape. But they made some free throws and we missed some shots,” said Carpenter.

Western (6-2) outscored the Vikings 19-10 in the fourth quarter to remain unbeaten in four SOC games.

Tibbs had 18 points and hauled down 21 rebounds for the Vikings (3-5, 2-2). Craft had 11 points, six assists and five steals.

Bobby Smitheson had 16 points and Chris Penwell hit four 3-pointers to lead the Indians.
