The Cincinnati Reds and Edwin Encarnacion have agreed to a two-year contract that will pay the third baseman at least $7.6 million through the 2010 season.

Encarnacion was the last Reds player in arbitration. The agreement was announced Tuesday, hours before a scheduled hearing in Phoenix.

Encarnacion had asked for $3.7 million this season, while the team offered $2.55 million. The deal calls for $2 million in 2009 and $4.75 million in 2010, along with an $850,000 signing bonus and performance bonuses of $25,000 for 600 plate appearances.

Encarnacion batted .251 last season with 26 home runs and 68 RBIs.

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Shortstop Alex Gonzalez has completed his first full-squad workout with the Cincinnati Reds after missing all of last season with a knee injury.

The 32-year-old says Tuesday’s workout was a big step, and he just wants to forget about last year and focus on the 2009 season.

Gonzalez sustained a compression fracture at the start of spring training last February. He had surgery in July to repair torn cartilage in his left knee.

Gonzalez is starting the final year of his three-year deal with the Reds. He signed a $14 million, three-year deal before the 2007 season, when he batted .272 with 16 homers and 55 RBIs.
