ATHENS (AP) — Ohio University officials say tests confirm that two freshmen have bacterial meningitis.

Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi says the two men are recovering and the school has alerted other students who lived near or took classes with them.

The health center is offering antibiotics to dozens of students concerned that they may become infected. The potentially deadly infection is spread through close contact and causes neck stiffness and fever.

The mother of 19-year-old Michael Crane of Bellbrook says her son developed flu-like symptoms Friday at the university in Athens in southeast Ohio. He was later diagnosed with meningitis and is being treated at a hospital near Dayton.

Mary Crane says school officials told her the sick students were in the same art class.
