Raiders, Marcum hold off Redwomen

Coach Matt Fulks didn’t evaluate his team in terms of their record. He measured them by their heart.

Despite entering the game winless and a heavy underdog, the Rock Hill Redwomen battled the entire game before falling 52-43 to the River Valley Lady Raiders on Wednesday in the Division III sectional tournament at Wellston High School.

“My girls never quit all year and they got better as the year went by,” said Fulks. “We had good senior leadership with Kayla Skaggs and Leah Terry.”

Kayla Skaggs and Chelsea Harper had 12 points each for the Redwomen. Courtney Duncan scored 11 and Leah Terry added eight.

River Valley’s 6-foot-1 center Brooke Marcum had 25 points.

“Our guards harassed their guards all night but we just couldn’t stop Marcum. We had no answer for her,” said Fulks. “We had a chance to win but we couldn’t get over the hump.”

Duncan had all of Rock Hill’s points in the first quarter as they fell behind 14-6.

Harper had eight points in the second quarter but the Lady Raiders went up 30-19 at the half.

Skaggs took over and scored all 10 Rock Hill points in the third quarter and it was 40-29.

Rock Hill chipped away at the lead in the fourth quarter and outscored the Lady Raiders 14-12, but they could never get even.
