When leading scorer Chad Harvey couldn’t play the entire game due to the flu, Caleb Blackburn and Joey Basedow came up with their own medical remedy.

Themselves.

Basedow scored a career-high 11 points and Blackburn had nine points and four rebounds as the St. Joseph Flyers beat the South Webster Jeeps 59-55 Saturday night.

“Caleb and Joey really stepped up and did some positive things. They knew Chad was under the weather. Payton hit some clutch shots and he didn’t practice (Friday) because he was under the weather,” said Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan who had to watch from the stands after being ejected from Wednesday’s game.

“Payton (Blair) hit some clutch shots and he didn’t practice (Friday) because he was under the weathe. We did a nice job of stepping up and showing some leadership when Chad wasn’t at his best.”

Blair finished with 13 points and three assists. T.J. Young had six points and four rebounds and Joseph “The Shoe” Unger added eight points.

Wes Loop scored 16 for South Webster and Connor Scott 10.

Blackburn six points and Basedow five in the first quarter as the Flyers took a 13-10 lead.

Harvey — who only played about two quarters — scored seven of his nine points in the second quarter and Blair added five as St. Joseph built a 33-23 halftime lead.

Blair scored five more in the third quarter as the lead went to 11 points. Loop had all 13 of South Webster’s points in the quarter.

Ashton Miller hit a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter as the Jeeps closed to within three points, but Unger and Basedow hit back-to-back shots to extended the lead and the Flyers held on for the win.

“Joseph Unger had four key points for us,” said Sheridan.

St. Joseph plays South Gallia at 6:15 p.m. Monday in the Division IV sectional tournament at Wellston.
