More than one year after his disappearance, the family and friends of Chris Haas are still hoping that one day they’ll know what happened to their loved one.

Haas, then 37, of Greasy Ridge, went missing in July 2010. His vehicle, a 1992 tan Honda 4-door, was found abandoned near Johns Creek.

The last time she saw him, his girlfriend, Tammy White, remembers that he told her he was going to meet someone who owed him money. She called him once that afternoon and Haas said he’d be back in a couple of hours. When she called back later he stopped answering the phone.

White, the man’s girlfriend of 15 years, said the past year has been difficult.

“It’s been hard,” she said. “Really hard.”

White said Haas was a good man who didn’t have enemies.

“He was really nice to everyone,” she said. “There’s probably not one person that didn’t like Chris.”

Haas, a laborer, had three sons of his own and had been a father figure to White’s son, Harold White, since he was 9.

Now 27, Harold White of Crown City, said he and Haas worked together frequently. Haas taught him everything he knows about the work, Harold White said. Together the two did concrete work and made roof repairs among other odd jobs.

“He was a real good person,” Harold White said. “We did things for people and didn’t charge them. He’d pay us out of his pocket even though he didn’t get paid.”

The man’s father, 61-year-old Michael Haas of Crown City, also remembers Chris as a good person.

“Chris was a good-hearted person. If you were down and out, he’d take money out of his own pocket,” Michael Haas said.

The past year has been hard, he said. Even a year later he still wakes up at night thinking about his son.

Tammy White said that in the months before his disappearance, Haas had been traveling to see a doctor in Florida for back pain, but emphasized that he was not involved in drugs.

The family remains frustrated that a year has passed without their finding out what happened to the man.

Recently, Tammy White has been posting missing posters about Haas. She hopes that someone will come forward with information about him.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is listing Haas’s name on NamUs, the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. Having his name on the list will be helpful if he’s found outside county or state lines. Sheriff Jeff Lawless said his office met with the family recently.

“It’s still an open investigation and we’re following up on leads,” Lawless said. “When you get to this point the leads do slow down.”

Tammy White said, that she remains hopeful and wants to know what happened to Haas, she’d be relieved just to find his body if he has been killed. She wants him to be buried next to his mother, she said.

“Someone has to know something,” Tammy White said. “He just couldn’t have vanished into thin air.”
