The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a weapon believed to have been discarded Thursday by two burglary suspects.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, Elmer Mills and Teddy Mulkey, who were arrested following a burglary and police chase yesterday, told detectives that they stole a small caliber handgun and a small assault rifle from the home of John and Amanda Carter of 2815 County Road 115, Chesapeake.

The two told detectives that they threw the weapons from a van window during the police chase while it was still in Ohio, according to the sheriff’s office. The chase ended in Huntington, W.Va.

After an extensive search Friday, deputies found the assault rifle. Officials are still looking for the handgun, the release states.

“Anyone who happens upon this weapon is urged not to touch it and to call the sheriff’s office immediately,” Sheriff Jeff Lawless said.

Mulkey and Mills are charged with aggravated burglary, felonious assault, and fleeing and eluding an officer. A third suspect has not been arrested.
