WELLSTON — Getting off on the right foot.

Strong pitching by Erica Corn and clutch hitting led the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings to a 9-2 win over the Wellston Lady Golden Rockets on Monday.

“It’s nice to start with a win. Corn had a nice first outing and we hit the ball well,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep.

The game was scoreless until the Lady Vikings got a run in the fourth inning when Jessie Morris singled and Brooke Skinner had a two-out double.

Symmes Valley scored three in the fifth inning to lead 4-0.

Julie Carter was safe on an error to start the inning, Kendra Saunders walked, and Corn had an RBI single. Nikki Nance followed with a run-scoring single, Morris was safe on an error, and Libby Ash hit into a fielder’s choice for the final run.

The Lady Vikings scored five times in the sixth.

Saunders walked and Corn doubled with one out. A wild pitch scored Saunders and Nance walked to put runners on the corner. Morris singled in a run and an overthrow from the outfield scored a run.

Chelsea Wall walked, Carter was safe on an error, Haily Pelletier had an RBI singled and an error sent home the final run.

Breanna Hall hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for Wellston.

Corn, who struck out six and did not walk a batter, got the win. She and Morris each went 3-4 at the plate as the Vikings had nine hits.

Symmes Valley hosts New Boston on Wednesday.
