OAK HILL — Ironton’s Jon Monnig doesn’t have a pilot’s license, but that doesn’t stop him from flying high.
Monnig, a junior, set the Division II district track meet record as he won the pole vault event on Wednesday when he cleared 14-feet.
“I felt good going over. I think I can go a lot higher. (Teammate) Ryan (Sias) and I will really get up for the regionals,” said Monnig.
The top four finishers in each event qualify for the regional meet next week at Byesville. Sias finished second when he cleared 12-6.
Fairland’s Kyle Kincaid also cleared 12-6 but finished third due to misses.
Monnig’s 14-foot vault also tied the Fighting Tigers’ school record.
Ironton senior Lukas Morris also advanced in the long jump with a winning distance of 20-feet, 11-inches.
In girls’ field events, South Point senior Ericka Leighty leaped 5-3 to win the high jump and teammate Angelica Stewart was third at 4-10. Fairland’s Jordan Aldridge tied Athens Mary Page Dalrymple at 4-8.
Ironton junior Lorna Ceaser was third in the shot put with a season’s best heave of 3-3.75.
All other field events will be held on the meet’s second day. The meet resumes at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The only final in the running events was the 4×800-meter relay. Both the Ironton and Fairland boys’ teams qualified for the regional meet.
Ironton’s team of Pierce Reeves, Dustin Moritz, Adam Stumbo and Gary Monroe ran an 8:38.43 time to place second behind Athens’ 8:28.38 time. Fairland was third as Jevon Hayes, Eddie Adkins, Kyle Taubenheim and Joe Stewart ran an 8:43.63 time.
The Division III district meet was held on Tuesday at Oak Hill High School and will conclude on Friday beginning at 5 p.m.
Coal Grove freshman Aaron Conley cleared 10-feet to win the pole vault.
Coal Grove’s Aaron Dickess was third in the discus with a toss of 129-11.
In the long jump, Coal Grove’s Daniel “Oakie” Haynes was second with a leap of 20-5 and Chesapeake’s Peter Hintz took third at 19-6.5.
