IRONTON — The Open Door basketball team players are representing their school in style, thanks to a donation from the Child Welfare Club.

The club has been an ongoing supporter of the Open Door School contributing to the building of their playground, purchasing books for the school’s library and participating in the annual MRDD Chili Fest and Craft Show.

“The goal of the Child Welfare Club is to improve quality of life for children,” said Cindy Brown, president of the Child Welfare Club. “When the club found out the team had not had new uniforms in several years, we knew that was what we wanted to do for them.”

The new uniforms were first introduced to the players, the community and some members of the Child Welfare Club at the 9th Annual MRDD March Madness Basketball game against the Open Door School Alumni.

Coach Jim Robinson, the Adaptive Physical Education Instructor at Open Door School, led the team in six wins, two losses and a win at the Area 6 Sectionals, this season.

As a program of the Lawrence County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, the Open Door School is certified by the Ohio Department of Education and accredited by the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

The school serves more than 60 students with multiple handicaps ages 6 – 21 from all Lawrence County areas.
