Library announces book signing

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Public Library, which is located at 1220 Gallia St. in Portsmouth, Ohio will present to the public on Saturday, June 20 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., a book signing with author of “Aristotle Owl an the Beckoning Bottoms” — R.A. Arthur.

Born in 1953, and being brought up with three sisters in Ohio by two outstanding parents, Arthur and his wife of 36 years raised two sons and two daughters, which has blessed them with nine grandchildren.

After working as a steelworker for 24 years and experiencing a plant closing just a year and ten months before he was eligible to retire, R.A. went back to school and became a junior high teacher and intervention specialist—never dreaming of becoming a novelist.

Arthur holds a bachelor’s degree in social science from Shawnee State University with concentration in elementary education, and a master’s degree in education from the University of Rio Grande with concentration as a K-12 Intervention Specialist.

R.A. states that “Aristotle Owl” is a true science fiction and fantasy adventure that was brainstormed unexpectedly in front of his class as he was teaching writing skills, and was truly a “wow” moment. After he wrote one chapter, the class encouraged him to keep writing and sharing it with them…which he did.

Ironton in Bloom fundraiser set

IRONTON — Ironton in Bloom is hosting a spaghetti fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus, 2101 S. Third St., Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Carry-outs may be called in by patrons and walk-ins are welcome. No deliveries. The orders will be ready. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 10. They are serving spaghetti with marinara or meat sauce, cole slaw, roll, and soft drinks (not with carry-outs).

Fairland to host youth volleyball camp

PROCTORVILLE — Fairland High School will hold a youth volleyball camp on June 15 to June 17 from 10 a.m. to noon for those entering 3rd grade through 9th grade.

The cost is $35.The camp will focus on the fundamentals of volleyball. Questions call coach Missy Gorby at 740-886-5509.

Visitors bureau seeks volunteers

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Cabell Huntington Convention & Visitors Bureau seeks volunteers from the community.

Volunteer opportunities will include welcoming guests to the new Visitors Center in Heritage Village, guiding tour groups through Huntington, retail sales in the gift shop and various other tasks.

Interested persons should attend an informational meeting to be held on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Visitors Center, located at 210 11th Street, Heritage Village.
