Cabell Midland needs sixth man to edge Dragons at XC meet

PROCTORVILLE — A tight race on the course meant a tighter race in the team standings.
Cabell Midland (W.Va.) and Fairland both finished with 46 points at Fairland’s Run by the River on Saturday, so the tie had to be broken by the finish of each team’s sixth runner. Cabell Midland’s sixth man was 18th overall and Fairland’s 20th.
George Washington (W.Va.) was third with 82 points, Ironton fourth with 95 total, Capital (W.Va.) had 144, Buffalo (W.Va.) 159, Gallipolis 208, River Valley 213 and Coal Grove 223.
Fairland’s Joe Stewart was the overall winner with a 17:15.10 time over the 5K-race course. Teammate Wayne Moore was second with a 17:30.79 time.
The Dragons had 18 other runners in the meet. The included:

Ironton’s Gary Monroe posted a 17:43.1 time and was sixth in the individual standings. Levi Runyon was 11th for Ironton at 18:00.8, Adam Stumbo 15th with an 18:12.7 time and Pierce Reeves 26th with an 18:52.9 clocking.
Also running for the Fighting Tigers were Tyler Lawless who ran 22:13.9 to finish No. 76, Bobby Sizemore 22:39.5 for 83rd, Nick Bishop 23:44.1 for No. 92, Sean Lawless 24:08.5 to place 94th and Nathan Hale was No. 100 with a 27:22.4 time.
Jacob Pauley led Coal Grove as he finished ninth overall with a 17:58.35 time.
Other Hornet runners included: Brandon Doyle No. 87 with a 23:11.35 clocking, Cody Erwin No. 97 at 24:51.59, No. 99 Codi Matheny at 25:45.45 and No. 103 Paul Brisson at 27:47.38.
Graham Oberly ran a 19:48.45 to finish 36th for Chesapeake. Teammate Stephen Welch was No. 71 with a 22:02.16 time, Chris Lively 79th at 22:29.86 and Dylan Bentley 98th at 25:05.46.
Gallipolis won the girls meet with 20 points. Cabell Midland was the runner-up with 62 points. Fairland was third with 69 followed by River Valley with 96, George Washington 109 and Spring Valley 154.
Peyton Adkins of Gallipolis was the overall winner with a 19:13.79 time while Ironton’s Taylor Hacker was second at 20:57.31.
Ironton’s Ariel Schweickart was seventh overall with a 22:07.29 time, Kaylie Sturgill 37th at 27:26.0 and Hannah Cronacher ran a 27:29.0 to place 39th.
Megan Ashton topped the Lady Dragons with a 23:03.88 time to place 11th.
Also running for Fairland were Tori Hutchinson who was 15th at 23:20.96, Carrie Tanner 23:37.92 for 16th, Carmen Webb 24:50.21 for 21st, Mariah Chafin 24th at 24:58.54, Alexis Wright 50th at 30:21.38, Amanda Cooper 30:43.30 for 53rd and Leah Sowards was 56th with a 35:35.09 time.
Coal Grove’s Kim Short ran a 29:11.56 to place 45th.
