This one was for J.Z.
Not the singer Jay-Z, but J.Z. as Joel Zornes, uncle of St. Joseph Female Flyers junior volleyball player Katie Hacker.
Zornes was sent to Columbus for a double organ transplant, so his niece dedicated her game against Sciotoville East and turned in a 12 block performance as the Female Flyers won in straight sets, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-11.
It was the first game Zornes had missed in years.
“Joel is our biggest fan. Katie had a great game at the net on defense,” said St. Joseph coach Andrea Rudmann. “She had more blocks than downtown Manhattan.”
But Hacker was not alone. Michelle Staton had 10 kills and Sara Burcham had nine setting assists.
“Staton had a great game again withi some monster spikes,” said Rudmann. “Sara Burcham owned the third game with her non-room service sets. And Sydney Hammond had some great digs.”
St. Joseph will play in the Ironton Tournament starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Ironton Middle School.
