An Ironton man accused of attempted aggravated murder is competent to stand trial, according to an evaluation discussed in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court Wednesday.

Calvin Carter, 53, of 729 Ninth St. Apt. A, Ironton, is accused of stabbing his girlfriend multiple times in an incident that happened in February at an Ironton apartment building.

Carter is charged with two counts of felonious assault and one count of attempted aggravated murder.

During a late March arraignment, Carter’s defense attorney, Warren Morford, entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

However, according to an evaluation by Court Clinic Forensic Services, the results of which were entered into the record Wednesday in Judge Charles Cooper’s Courtroom in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court, the man is competent to stand trial.

Morford told the judge he does not agree with the results of the evaluation and asked to be able to cross-examine the evaluator in the event of a trial in the case. The attorney also requested that another evaluation be done in the matter.

Cooper told Morford that he has a right to cross-examine the evaluator and to have another evaluation done as well.

The next pretrial hearing in the case has been scheduled for June 8.
