CG Safety day is set for Saturday

COAL GROVE — It is part education and part entertainment: The annual Coal Grove Safety Day will be Saturday at the Coal Grove Board of Education Field.

A parade will begin at the old Cold Spot building and run up Pike Street to Memorial Street, turn onto High Street and end at the board of education field next to the outdoor basketball courts.

There will be inflatables, a kids’ firefighter challenge, a car crash extrication demonstration, free food and drinks and displays of emergency services vehicles.

Barktober program to be on Oct. 3

SUMMIT, Ky. — Pets will be in the spotlight Saturday, Oct. 3, as Barktober returns to the Summit Branch of Boyd County Public Library.

This multi-species program includes pet contests and parade, as well as door prizes and other giveaways. Barktober is on the first Saturday of October each year.

Registration for the various contests starts at 10 a.m. at the branch, located at 1016 Summit Road, across from Boyd County Middle School.

There are 12 different contest categories, including prettiest, ugliest, fluffiest, biggest, smallest, best trick, best tail wag, best kisser, most literate, most obedient, best dressed, and pet/owner lookalike. There will also be a Director’s Award given.

Water and treats will be provided to the pets. Humans who sign up their pets can register to win a door prize.

Pets must be on leashes or otherwise restrained. Owners are responsible for their pet’s behavior.

MU receives $1M grant for research

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Marshall University has received a $1 million federal grant for a cancer genetics research project in partnership with West Virginia University.

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall said Monday that researchers will study the genetic makeup of donated tumor material to establish a cancer genomics network. The goal is to use the information to create customized diagnostics, prognosis and treatment.
