It’s all about the defense for the St. Joseph Flyers.
Using another solid defensive effort, the Flyers blanked the Rose Hill (Ky.) Royals 4-0 Thursday in a soccer game.
“We played well for the most part,” said Flyers’ coach Sissy Clyse. “As usual, we had a strong showing defensively. It was nice to see forward T.J. Young score with an assist by Sara Basedow.
“Freshman center midfielder Nick Roach had a good, solid shot. Ike Palmer continues to work hard as a versatile player both offensively and defensively.”
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead in the first half on an unassisted goal by Palmer and another goal by Roach with an assist by Sunni Clyse.
Payton Blair had an unassisted goal to get the scoring started in the second half. Young scored the final goal with an assist from Basedow.
“We need to fine-tune our shots. We had 34 shots and only four goals definitely leaves room to improve,” said coach Clyse.
Cody Blackburn and Sunni Clyse left the game with injuries but are expected to return next week. Blackburn suffered a hard kick above the shin guard and Clyse took a head butt to the temple area.
“It was a very rough game,” said coach Clyse.
The Flyers (5-4-2) host South Point at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. A junior varsity game will follow.
