ATHENS — It was Murphy’s Law with a hole in his glove.
The Fairland Dragons were guilty of six errors that led to four unearned runs as the Lucasville Valley Indians held on for a 6-4 win Saturday in the Division III district finals.
Chad Fisher was the victim of the shaky defense. He struck out four and did not walk a batter as he gave up just two earned runs.
“Fisher threw well enough to win. We had four errors with two outs in the second. It’s a heartbreaker, that’s for sure,” said Fairland coach Bryan Ward.
“We had our opportunities but we gave them too many. But that’s baseball. You have to hit and catch it. We did okay hitting it, we just didn’t catch.”
Alex Holcomb led off the game with a home run and the Indians used four straight errors to score three times in the second. Another error led to a run in the third.
Fairland got a run in the third when Tanner Sowards tripled and Jon Baise hit a sacrifice fly.
The Dragons scored in the fourth on an RBI single by Matt Campbell after Fisher singled and stole second.
Fairland got within 5-4 in the sixth when Eric Riley tripled, Fisher walked and stole second, and Joey Mundy had a two-run single.
Ryan Wamsley doubled and Brice Crabtree singled to give Valley an insurance run in the seventh.
Fairland finishes the season 15-8.
