Ironton Rotary pancake breakfast will be Saturday
The Ironton Rotary Club’s annual pancake breakfast returns on Saturday.
The event has been held since 1976.
“The pancake breakfast is one of our favorite traditions,” said Ironton Rotary Club Sarah Simmons. “With our motto of ‘Service above self,’ this event embodies that. It is not just about pancakes, it is about offering community connections, making Lawrence County a better place to live and helping students who will probably come back here to take care of our families.”
As always, the money from the flapjacks goes towards scholarships for Lawrence County residents.
“This is our biggest fundraisers of the year,” Simmons said. “Proceeds from every ticket go two nursing scholarships, so it is a simple, but powerful way, to support local education and future health care professionals, many of whom stay in our community to serve as nurses.”
And to help out will be members of the Ohio University Southern’s Nursing Program.
“They are a huge help in this event,” Simmons said. “These students are incredibly dedicated, not just to their studies, but to also community services.”
Also there to help will be members of Boy Scout troops 103 and 106.
“They have been a part of this for years. They handle not only serving drinks but cleaning up,” she said. “It is really nice to see the young people in these events that keep community spirit alive.”
The Ironton Rotary Club, which was formally chartered on March 20, 1920, is a civic group dedicated to helping.
“In the past year, we’ve donated to Bobcat Academy children’s summer program, Ironton City Mission, Backpack Buddies, awarded five scholarships, and are supporting indigenous Maya community development in the Lake Atitlan region in Guatemala,” Simmons said. “And we are still maintaining that Rotary fountain, as well!”
And of course, there is one man who has been at this event for years.
“Darwin Haynes will be back on the griddle,” Simmons said. “He’s been flipping pancakes for over 20 years and we know a lot of people look forward to seeing him in action.”
The Ironton Rotary Club pancake breakfast will be at the Knights of Columbus hall, 2101 S. Third St., Ironton., 7 a.m.–noon. Cost is $8.
