The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Lawrence County and is warning drivers about potential floods caused by nearly an inch of rain overnight and melting snow. The saturated ground has produced conditions ripe for landslides and debris flows on steep slopes around the area.
The warning is for Lawrence and Gallia counties in Ohio, Carter and Greenup counties in Kentucky and Jackson, Mason and Roane counties in West Virginia.
Specific areas could include Ironton, Coal Grove, Lake Vesuvius, Waterloo in Lawrence County and Flatwoods, Russell and Raceland in Kentucky.
The National Weather Service advises drivers to turn around and don`t drown when encountering flooded roads, since most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
They added that the residents with homes on or at the base of hillsides should be aware of the potential for landslides and watch for trees leaning in unusual orientations, water and mud seepage where not expected and other signs of potential ground movement.
You can report flooding to the National Weather Service by calling toll free at 800-401-9535, when you can do so safely.
