Lawless becomes county’s most-elected sheriff
The Lawrence County Commission met on Jan. 10 for an organizational meeting and their first business meeting of the year.
Commission president Colton Copley was again appointed to helm the body for another term.
Commissioner DeAnna Holliday was chosen as vice president.
Meeting times for the commission were set for Tuesdays at 10 a.m.
In the business meeting, the commission approved new hires for Lawrence County Emergency Services, as well as the resignation of Lori Morris as director of finance for the agency.
Morris was elected as the new Lawrence County recorder in November and has started her term.
Holliday thanked Morris for her work at EMS.
“We want to note our appreciation of Lori and what she meant to Lawrence EMS for so many years,” Holliday said. “She was a stable, guiding force and we are so appreciative of what she brought to the table. And we are very excited for her in her new endeavor.”
Copley also voiced his thoughts.
“She has done a great job,” he said. “We have appreciated all her leadership and information she has brought to us.”
Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless was present for the meeting. Lawless was just elected to a fifth term in office, a record for the position.
“It’s a proud moment for me and I look forward to working with more good people,” Lawless said.
The commissioners congratulated Lawless for the moment.
“I don’t think there’s a more beloved politician serving in our county than our sheriff,” Copley said.
“I think it’s a testament to your service and a reflection of how people feel about you,” Holliday said.
