CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds and the local chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced their 2024 award winners on Wednesday with Elly De La Crus, Nick Martinez and Luke Maile garnering honors.

One of the game’s most electrifying players, De La Cruz was voted the team’s most valuable player.

Martinez was selected as the best pitcher and catcher Luke Maile was the Joe Nuxhall Good Guy winner.

In his first full big league season, De La Cruz led the Reds in home runs (25), hits (160), batting average (.259), doubles (36), triples (10) and runs (105). He also finished second in RBIs (76) and third in walks (69).

De La Cruz was a highlight waiting to happen each time he reached base and his major league-leading 67 stolen bases proved just that.

De La Cruz continues to develop in the field as well, making plays with his glove, arm and legs that few if any players in baseball have the ability to make.

His efforts in 2024 earned him a nod to the 2024 National League All-Star team as well.

In his first season with the Reds, Martinez proved to be everything the Reds hoped for and more when they signed the veteran last offseason.

Overall, Martinez appeared in 42 games: 26 as a reliever, 16 as a starter. As a reliever, Martinez was 5-2 with a team-best 1.86 ERA in 53 1/3 innings.

As a starter, Martinez posted a 3.84 ERA. He was exceptional in his return to the rotation at the beginning of August, punctuated by a September in which he was named MLB’s National League Pitcher of the Month.

Martinez had a 0.83 ERA in 32 2/3 innings spanning five starts with 30 strikeouts and a 0.67 WHIP. Opposing hitters managed just a .161 average against him in those outings.

The Joe Nuxhall Good Guy Award recognizes a player with an outstanding relationship with the media and the public and the award went to Maile.

A nine-year veteran, Maile has been a clubhouse leader since arriving to the Reds organization in 2023.

The Covington (Ky.) Catholic graduate has been instrumental in the development of the Reds’ young pitchers. Win or lose, he always makes himself accessible to the media and has further showcased his personality through appearances on the Jim Day Podcast and being mic’d up for a game.

In addition, he often chatted with fans during batting practice, participated in season ticket member and kids club member events, always made time for Make-A-Wish guests, and met with young ballplayers during a Reds Camps visit to Great American Ball Park.
